About the design:
This is a milk snake, Lampropeltis triangulum, a species that is considered to be one of the king snakes. Milk snakes are found over most of the United States and, while they come in a variety of patterns, their dominant colors are red, white and black. They are thought to be mimics of the venomous coral snake that is found in the most southern parts of North America. Milk snakes can grow up to 60 inches in length, but most are no where near that size. They feed on a variety of small animals, including lizards, birds, rodents, and insects. This particular specimen is a subspecies found in Kansas known as the ‘red milk snake’. Wild populations of milk snakes suffer from over collection by those wishing to sale the snakes as pets, though many wild-caught individuals never adapt to captivity and end up starving to death or dying for other reasons.
